Barry Bonds: Cyclist

Filed under: cycling — Tags: — Roger @ 5:40 pm

Did you know Barry Bonds is a cyclist?

I didn’t until I saw a picture of him on Facebook today competing in Saturday’s El Tour De Tucson.

Bonds — wearing the No. 25 bib, the same number he wore when he was blasting home runs for the San Francisco Giants — finished the 111-mile course in 5 hours, 47 minutes, 7.97 seconds, good for 700th place among the 3,137 people who completed the race.

The Arizona Daily Star says Bonds had a big smile on his face after crossing the finish line, what what he did next was vintage Bonds. Spectators were asking for pictures and autographs, prompting Bonds’ quick exit, the newspaper reported.

A cynic might say it’s a natural fit for Bonds, who was accused of using illegal performance-enhancing drugs during his baseball days, to enter the world of cycling. But I say it’s not a bad thing that the 47-year-old Bonds has found a sport to love the rest of his life.
