Missouri Professional Cycling Series

The Tour de Grove has grown in prestige the past few years, and it’s about to step things up another notch in 2012.

First of all, it’s now part of the Missouri Professional Cycling Series, which will take place May 11-13 in three St. Louis neighborhoods. Here are the events:

Loop de Loop Grand Prix, May 11: The Loop de Loop Grand Prix criterium will travel through the University City Loop, one of St. Louis’ top entertainment district. It starts and ends on Delmar Avenue near Cicero’s restaurant, and the course includes Melville, Washington and Trinity avenues. Racing begins at 3:30 p.m. with the women’s and men’s pro races under the lights at 8:15 and 9:15 respectively.

Tour de Grove, May 12: The Tour de Grove remains the centerpice of MO PRO because it’s a part of the USA Cycling National Criterium Calendar and the USA Crits Championship Series. The race takes place in St. Louis’ Grove Neighborhood and starts and ends on Chouteau Street and includes Manchester Road, Newstead, Clayton and Tower Grove. Racing starts at 9:40 a.m., the pro women’s race starts at 3:40 p.m., and the men’s pro race begins at 5 p.m.

Dutchtown Classic, May 13: The Dutchtown Classic is part of the USA Crits Championship Series and is the finale of MO PRO. The start/finish line is on Compton Avenue, and includes Meramec Street, Virginia Avenue, Osceola Street, Louisiana Avenue and Osage Street. Racing begins at 9 a.m., the women’s pro race starts at 3 p.m., and the men’s pro race is at 4:15 p.m.

MO PRO organizer Mike Weiss said three American professional teams that have raced in the Amgen Tour of California are expected to be at MO PRO this year. The addition of more international teams to the Tour of California bumped those teams from that competition May 13-20, so they’re coming to St. Louis instead.

Among the teams committed to MO PRO include Pure Black Racing, Elbowz Racing Team, Bissell Pro Cycling Team, Team Type I, Team Tibco and Primal/Map My Ride.

For casual cycling fans, there are other other events like kids races, the ARTCRANK poster exhibit at the Atomic Cowboy and a blessing of the bikes.
