Cutters hurt in bicycle-car crash

Three members of the Cutters — the Bloomington, Ind., cycling team immortalized in the classic 1979 cycling film “Breaking Away” — are recovering from injuries suffered Wednesday while out on a training ride.

The Associated Press reported that four members of the Cutters team, riding two abreast, were pedaling on Indiana 446 near Lake Monroe when a driver lost control of his Honda Accord on wet pavement. The Monroe County Sheriff’s office said 24-year-old Stephen Torrance, the driver of the car, was cited for driving left of center.

Riders Eric Brodell, 19, and Eric Young and Michael Schroeder, both 21, have been treated for injuries they suffered, according to radio station WIBC-FM in Indianapolis. Brodell was the most seriously injured, and he was in good condition in a Bloomington hospital on Thursday.

The fourth rider, Thomas Walsh, was not hit.

The Indiana Daily Student, Indiana University’s student newspaper, has an interesting account detailing the hours before and after the crash.

“It was definitely a relief in the fact that it could have been a lot worse,”  Taylor Haville, one of Brodell’s friends,  said in the article. “But it was definitely kind of heartbreaking because I know how much he likes biking right now. To have him sit out and have to watch while they all bike, it kind of sucks, but he’ll be back in it.”
