Jure Robic, the five-time winner of the Race Across America, died Friday as the result of a bicycle-car accident in his native Slovenia.

According to a preliminary report from the Kranj Police Authority, the accident occurred about 2 p.m. when Robic, 45, was struck by a car driven by a 55-year-old local resident about 5 kilometers from Robic’s home in Jesenice. Robic died at the scene, VeloNews reported.

Robic was the dominant figure in RAAM over the past 10 years. Robic, a member of the Slovenian army, won this year’s race as well as 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Robic also set the 24 hour road world record, won Le Tour Direct two consecutive times and won the DOS, the race across Slovenia, three consecutive times. Robic achieved over 100 victories and 150 podium appearances throughout his cycling career, according to Cycling News.
